Favourite time each day has to be night-time. When the sun sets and the stars are out, there is much to be done. People need to collect firewood, start a fire, decide what and how to cook, cut vegetables and meat, marinate meat, prepare washing area, make hot drinks, not forgetting pitching of tents and setting up of toileting site.

Nightly chore #5: Waiting for dinner
Finally we get to eat. The food was always worth the wait, perhaps we were just hungry. But seriously, there's fire-baked pizza, Australian bush cooking, asian food, even banana dessert....what's there not to like?!
The multiple tasks seemed overwhelming on the first night, but with each passing night the tasks became second nature. After a good dinner there is washing to be done, usually in the freezing cold water.

There is not much to do after dinner. Apart from the debrief sessions from the instructors, handing over and briefing of the next day’s activities by the day IC, it’s mainly a time to chill and just chit chat with one another.
There's nothing much in this world that beats sitting by a fire and enjoying coffee |
The stars are amazing at night, and the Southern Cross is obvious every night. There's a cool way to use the Southern Cross to find the south pole, click on the hyperlink to find out.
Such sights were a NIGHTLY affair |
The fire draws people and the mug of hot coffee warms the hands. By 10pm, the fire is doused and everyone is in the comfort of his or her tents and sleeping bags.
Campfires never felt so warm and comfortable |
Life is simple out there in the bush. Back home, people rush to finish work and send emails till midnight and beyond, or get woken up by the cries of their babies. In the Aussie bush, you only hear the sounds of birds, and even they become silent after the sun sets to mark the end of another wonderful day.
