My OB Australia Journey – Lessons from the Trail

The first multi-day expedition was to trek through the Australian bush. Weather was definitely much more comfortable than in hot and humid Singapore, although it could get pretty cold if we stopped moving for long. I love trails, and there are many lessons we could learn from the trail.

#1: What goes up must come down
When the going gets tough and you feel like giving up, along comes a downslope and all is good and happy again.

#2: What goes down must also come up
Just when you’re enjoying and having a good time, the trail throws you an upslope to challenge you again, constantly keeping you out of your comfort zone.

#3: Reaching your destination
When you think you are lost and far from your destination, the reality could be that it is just round the corner or over the next hill. And don’t just focus on the destination and lose sight of the process, stop to smell the flowers.

#4: Accomplishment is not about reaching the top first, but using your strength to help others reach the top
This is a quotation from somebody, and it resonates a lot with me.

#5: Ask for help
It takes greater courage to ask for help when you need it, than to soldier on alone till you break. Don’t let personal ego and pride hamper overall team progress.

#6: Seize the day and be Present

Every sunrise marks the beginning of a brand new day. Be thankful for what you have achieved yesterday as well as the people who have helped you, but strive to be a better you today. The present is a gift.
