Kayaking Endau River (Day3)

The 3rd day of kayaking was more trekking than kayaking. We had to drag our kayaks upstream along Jasin River, as 90% of the time the current was too strong to paddle upstream.

In the morning before set off, we sighted this hornbill perched on a tree in the campsite, feeding on the berries which it was standing on. Later I found out it was the Rhinoceros Hornbill, the state bird of Sarawak.

Paddling upstream always puts me in a dilemma. Stay in the kayak and paddle? Takes a lot of effort and doesn't seem to move forward. Come down and drag? Unglam. Most of the time, getting to the destination was more important than the process of getting there, at least in the case of upstream paddling.

When you are dragging the kayak in the river, you can console yourself that at least you are not carrying it on your back. But sometimes you do have to carry the kayak and portage. Harder for me on a single though

Having a well deserved break.

Some of the random things we did while resting, to mark our presence.

Excuse me, who left his dentures behind?

When we finally reached the campsite, we realised it was occupied....by my former JC! But it was a blessing in disguise, this meant we could return to the previous night's campsite, which was far better.

Today was for nature exploration. First stop was trekking 500m to the Blue Lagoon, but more like green. Pretty sight and cool waters. Refreshing in a hot day. But we were wet from all the river tracing in the morning, didn't make much of a difference, it was still water!

Fungi! Huge!

Then our insect guy went to overturn all the rocks he could get his hands on, and what a discovery! There were many more, but this one was big enough to be photographed. It was some nymph, but not sure exactly what.

After that we paddled to the Upeh Guling Waterfall. Beautiful waterfall. The trek on the rocks was a challenge though.

This was where I met my damsel in distress! I mean a damselfly. She liked my paddle very much, kept flying from one blade to the other.

I love damselfly.

The last highlight of the day was the S-shaped rapid, just before we reached our campsite.

End of day3.
